Do you spend more time thinking about the future or the past? Why?

Soaring to My Future

Past or Future: Where My Mind Wanders
I probably spend more time reflecting on my past experiences and accomplishments. Not out of regret or longing, but because those memories have shaped who I am today—each chapter a testament to resilience, faith, and unexpected grace.
My future is already written. I have no choice but to live it out. God’s way. God’s will.
When I look back, I see a tapestry woven with both darkness and light. From a childhood of sexual abuse to joining the Marine Corps after high school—that uniform became my first real armor, my first declaration that I was more than what had been done to me. Marriage followed. Three beautiful children and a troublesome divorce that nearly broke me, but instead taught me that endings can be doorways.
Getting my degree in Computer Science seemed practical at the time, but it was really about following my dream to be a writer—just taking the long way around. Then came meeting the man who would reach the depths of my heart, the one who saw past all the carefully constructed walls.
My professional journey unfolded in layers. First, writing computer user manuals, then training users, eventually moving into management. Second, owning my own successful technical writing company—building something from nothing, proving I could stand on my own.
Retirement from the business world led to writing fiction, where I could finally tell the stories that lived in my soul. Founding the Florida Writers Association gave me community and purpose, even as my children were growing up and moving on, spreading their own wings.
Later, grandchildren came, one at a time—six precious souls who call me Grandma and remind me that life continually renews itself.
A move to an airport community changed everything again. My husband became a pilot, and watching him soar stirred something in me I didn’t know was there. Then I, too, reached for the clouds and learned to fly. A fateful crash with terrible injuries on New Year’s Day 2022 grounded those dreams, but hopefully I’ll be back among the clouds.
That is up to God’s plan.
Past or future? Definitely reflections of what’s behind me. Each memory is a reminder of God’s faithfulness, of how He’s carried me through fire and lifted me toward sky. I have faith in God to write my future and not worry about it. He’s already proven He’s a far better author than I could ever be.
So I spend my time looking back—not with sadness, but with wonder. And I face forward with open hands, ready for whatever story He’s writing next.
