My favorite Holiday

I

What is your favorite holiday? Why is it your favorite?

It has to be Thanksgiving. Not for the food, most of which I can’t eat anyway due to my Gastroparesis. It’s what the holiday represents. Thankfulness. Grateful. Peace. It’s when families can get together and for one day forget about petty issues.

It’s where people can go to shelters and receive a hot turkey dinner and share stories with strangers on similar journeys.

It’s where other people make reservations ahead and eat dinner at a posh restaurant. Sharing their meal with others who didn’t bother to cook, either.

For me, it’s a day of remembrance. Of living with my grandma and my mom. So small. So happy. Never understanding that this would be the last time I felt at peace until I left home after high school graduation and joined the USMC.

  1. This post is both tender and profound. The way you connect Thanksgiving not just to tradition, but to deeper themes like peace, gratitude, and memory, gives the holiday a layered, emotional texture that goes far beyond the table. Your reflections on finding connection—whether in a shelter, a restaurant, or a memory—are especially moving. That final image of a small, happy moment with your grandma and mom hits hard, reminding us how the simplest times often leave the deepest imprint. Thank you for sharing such a personal and heartfelt perspective.
